Controller–area network (CAN or CANbus) is a vehicle bus standard designed to allow microcontrollers and devices to communicate with each other within a vehicle without a host computer.
CANbus is a message-based protocol, designed specifically for automotive applications but now also used in other areas such as industrial automation and medical equipment.
CANbus is one of five protocols used in the OBD-II vehicle diagnostics standard. The OBD standard has been mandatory for all cars and light trucks sold in the United States since 1996, and the EOBD standard has been mandatory for all petrol vehicles sold in the European Union since 2001 and all diesel vehicles since 2004. FMS can also be supported.
The Airmax Vehicle Location + GPS device supports a CANbus interface as standard, allowing direct connection to this increasingly common network feature in cars, trucks and vans. This connection gives fleet managers access to a wide variety of vehicle information such as sweet spot management, MPG, mileage, instantaneous fuel consumption, power, etc, which can then be used to monitor individual driver’s driving performance and vehicle fault codes. GPS can be added to enhance the data so that tracking and geo-coded events combine with the CANbus.
On-Board Diagnostics or OBD refers to a vehicle’s self-diagnostic and reporting capability. OBD systems give access to health information for various vehicle sub-systems. The amount of diagnostic information available via OBD has varied widely since the introduction in the early 1980s of on-board vehicle computers, which made OBD possible. Early instances of OBD would simply illuminate a malfunction indicator light, or MIL, if a problem was detected—but would not provide any information as to the nature of the problem. Modern OBD implementations use a standardised digital communications port to provide real-time data in addition to a standardised series of diagnostic trouble codes, or DTCs, which allow one to rapidly identify and remedy malfunctions within the vehicle.
So what does all this mean?
The Airmax Remote system permanently monitors the degree of wear and tear of individual components including mileage and diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). It also checks the time/mileage recommendations for service intervals. By collecting this data it will automatically give you notice when and which service is next due.
